Recent Work

There has been a second iteration of the 'urban necklace' series in the last month. The wall piece had a few new elements since its' first version earlier in the fall. I am not sure what prompted me to pick up all the discarded work gloves, but I'm glad I did. They are filthy and discolored, every time I bushed up against them there is a cloud of dust. But they evoke many things for me and look wonderful. It was up on the wall for a couple weeks and then came down for an installation we had in the gallery last weekend. It is safely store away.
My latest version, still under construction, consists of stuffed animal toys that I have been picking up at thrift stores. A half formed idea and I am working out a couple construction issues, but Melvin is a fan.

Four New Drawings For A Dreary Fall Day

Michael McGuire - Color Dot Study - Block Printing Ink on Arches Watercolor Paper - 40x26 inches

Lastly an unfinished drawing that I began in late spring. A hand drawing record of my swimming yardage this summer. I was surprisingly  faithful about recording the yardage each day, I found it motivating to keep track and I have not put in this much yardage in months. The crosshatching is time consuming and I fell behind immediately. I hope to finish it at some point but I do like it in incomplete state.

Andersonville Arts Weekend

They have moved Andersonville Arts Weekend up a month this year and I'm not sure what I think about that. Coming off a busy summer I was hoping September would be a relaxing month—not so far. We will be hosting a cocktail party this coming Friday in conjunction with Andersonville Arts week and we will be featuring new work by Michelle Peterson Albandoz and myself. Stop by this Friday, September 14th from 6 until 9pm, it looks like it will be a beautiful evening and the bar will be open.

Three Pairs

New work this week includes three pairs of drawings for some odd reason.
The two drawings on blue are a commission, reworking an old idea but now on blue watercolor stained paper. Making the connection between these isometric-like drawings and blue-prints quite clear.
The other two pairs are really a case of one drawing being not quite enough practice to work out the beginning of an idea properly. Two drawings help to clarify what one is after conceptually and makes evident some of the technical issues one will run into.
The grid on the speckled paper had me in mind of star charts or NASA moon photographs, the notion of mapping something disorderly. Order out of chaos.
The graphic black and white drawings at the bottom come from my experimenting with a new black paint called 'Black 2.0'. It is marketed as the second darkest black - Anish Kapoor has a monopoly on the blackest black, but this one is very dark and shows almost no brush marks.

Smalls

I had an out of town client request photographs of 'smaller' drawings this morning. As long as I am making them I may as well share the photos here on my blog. It was a quick photo session and I apologize for less than idea images, but I do make smaller drawings.

Framed 'Lake' Watercolors

I have watercolors at the Montrose yacht club this summer but I'm not sure we will be holding a reception there anytime soon. In the meantime I have hung the nine
framed 'Lake' watercolors I have on hand here in the gallery on the wall. They look great together.

New Blue Drawings

I recently dyed seven sheets of Arches Watercolor paper in anticipation of a commission that did not come to fruition. This week I am using some of the paper to work through a few ideas I have regarding 'Isometric' drawing. I'm looking at the optical nature of these types of drawing, how they seem to fool the eye as elements line up in quirky ways. Very much derived from 'drafting' class, whatever that may mean in this digital world, and the blue obviously evokes blue prints.  I also very much like the diagonal patterning that is happening in the last drawing. That may have to become a line of inquiry.
