Branch Drawings (From Observation)

I spent last week dog sitting in the suburbs. It was unusually warm for late March/early April and the dog and I spent much time in the back yard. A few trees were just starting to form buds and I took advantage of three warm days in a row to make a few drawings of the branches of the surrounding trees. The drawings are all India Ink on 14 x 17 Bristol paper and have a slightly naive and simplified quality as I attempted to make sense of the complex branching systems I was observing.

I Am Hopeful About Spring

The weather is up and down this month, not unusual for Chicago at this time of year, but I am hopeful that spring is on the way. I'm not sure when this photo was made but it fits my vernal mood. Shot from the Montrose Harbor Bird Sactuary (the Magic Hedge) look south towards the city.

And a New Box Drawing

I just made this drawing. It is a direction which I am moving with these boxes; change in line weight and exploring dividing up the volume.

Three Old Box Drawings

I had a request for a box drawing when I was in Florida so when I returned I unearthed four and was able to sell one. These three remain and I'm intrigued by the idea once again. I'm thinking of mixing up the line weight and toying with volume.

Quick Trip to Florida

I'm just back from a short trip to Florida. Very quick but I worked in a sketch book while I was there; Ink drawings with a wash of Paine's Grey. It was great to see the sun, feel it's warmth and color, and hang at the beach.

Two New Drawings

India ink on archival, toned, Crescent board. Two inch squares reassembled.

Horizontal Drawing

Does this drawing have a connection to the photographs in the previous post? New drawing using cereal boxes, painted on with India Ink, cut into 2 inch squares and reassembled. Note the change in background colors from the differing boxes.
